But when I decided to join Viking Yi Dun’ s inaugural sailing of China Discovery , a 10-day voyage spotlighting coastal destinations from Shanghai to Shenzhen, back in September, I realized something: it wasn’t so long ago when I insisted on a sidekick during roadtrips and overnights at hotels. So, what if cruising alone as a woman could be just as fulfilling? As it turns out, the experience was beyond rewarding. While the trip wasn’t without some hiccups—remember, this was a new itinerary for Viking —overall it exceeded my expectations. More importantly, it got me excited to cruise on my own again. Below are three reasons why Viking ocean cruises are a smart choice for solo women travelers. Convenience Viking Yi Dun's Explorers Lounge Here’s one of the most convenient things about Viking’s ocean ships: their deck plans are identical. I’d taken the Iconic Iceland, Greenland & Canada cruise a few months prior and the Viking Homelands cruise last year, so I knew where everything was located, from Deck 1’s Nordic Spa to the Explorer’s Lounge on Deck 7 and 8 (my favorite quiet place to work). Not wasting time to memorize the ship’s layout translated into more time doing exactly what I wanted. A Penthouse veranda stateroom on Viking Yi Dun Though Yi Dun’s layout was familiar, there were key differences setting it apart from the rest of Viking’s ocean fleet. Because the ship (first unveiled in 2017 as the Viking Sun) was the result of a unique partnership between Viking and China Merchants Group that resulted in its sale to China in 2021, it got rebranded as Yi Dun and now flies the Chinese flag; this permits unprecedented access to ports previously inaccessible to other major cruise lines. In addition the all-Chinese staff, there are nods to the ship’s adopted homeland throughout, such as customized Freyja bathroom amenities, regional cuisine, and Chinese signage. There is one downside worth noting: Viking doesn’t have staterooms expressly for solo travelers. However, the company does occasionally offer specially-priced single supplements, so it’s best to check the website for updates. Flexibility Viking Yi Dun in Dongtou, China Unlike smaller expedition and river ships, Viking’s ocean vessels hold up to 930 passengers—so you have ample opportunities to mingle with other people if you wish, especially during meals and excursions. Conversely: if you’re in a more solitary mood, it’s easier to keep a low profile and not bump into the same faces over and over again, as you would on smaller vessels. Destination-focused dining has long been one of Viking’s strongsuits, but Yi Dun really excelled in this regard. While the restaurant concepts were the same ones you’d find on every ocean ship, there was a thoughtful effort to immerse guests in local cuisine while offering lots of flexibility and options. The World Café’s buffet was stocked day-to-night with an enticing display of sweet and savory Chinese classics, from jian dui (fried sesame balls) to made-to-order dan dan noodles, while the Pool Grill served up Chinese-style chicken thigh burgers. The Chef’s Table featured three tasting menus rotating between Japanese-Korean—I savored the Korean BBQ tofu accompanied by perilla leaves and kimchi fried rice—Thai, and Singaporean cuisines. Even in-room dining had locally-curated options; the kung pao chicken was a standout. Torshavn, the popular late night hangout, also got a rebrand as 1872, the year China Merchants Group was established. No matter the craving or time of day, I could always find what I looking for. Safety A festive welcome at Dongtou for Viking Yi Dun passengers While safety takes top billing for most solo female travelers, it holds even more importance when exploring lesser-known parts of the world like China’s coast. In addition to offering assistance with processing visas ahead of the cruise, Viking made sure everyone felt completely safe from embarkation to disembarkation. Guanyin Altar in Mount Putuo, China Excursions, in particular, were organized with great care. Guests were welcomed at nearly every port of call with a friendly crew (and sometimes, lively performances), perhaps vendors selling souvenirs, and dedicated staff to help navigate to where to go. Though the excursions varied in terms of enrichment—which I expected since this was China Discovery’s first sailing—at least guests were able to access to parts of China unfamiliar to most foreigners. I especially enjoyed Architecture of Gulangyu, a guided walking tour that opened my eyes to the multi-cultural history and storied buildings of the tiny pedestrian-only island off the coast of Xiamen. Another reason why Viking ocean cruises feel so safe is by design; picture them as luxury floating hotels. They include the modern-day comforts, upscale amenities, and attentive staff—all of whom have undergone extensive training to assist with a range of requests, from logistical to medical—you’d expect from five-star properties, but have to the ability to navigate you to multiple destinations across water. Now, Sony Honda Mobility (SHM) will unveil a prototype of its electric sedan, the Afeela, at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, Nikkei Asia said . Market watchers are eager to see if Afeela's software-driven approach can thrive in the competitive U.S. EV market, though analysts warn the timing may be unfavorable. Izumi Kawanishi, president and chief operating officer of SHM said: "The hardware, or car body, is pretty much complete. We'll be working on the software until the last minute." President-elect Donald Trump is expected to cut EV subsidies, potentially reducing electric vehicle sales by nearly 30%, according to a National Bureau of Economic Research study. Automakers also face challenges from his proposed tariff hikes, which could increase costs. Mainly cloudy skies and a 40 per cent chance of showers are also in the forecast for today. Tonight, a low of -8 C and few clouds are expected. The weather agency warns on its website about icy and slippery roads with freezing rain in the forecast starting Monday and continuing through Tuesday . “Freezing rain may cause surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots to become icy and slippery. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas,” Environment Canada says on its website. Monday will see a high of -5 C with periods of snow. A low of -1 C and periods of snow are expected for the night. On Tuesday, a high of 5 C and a 60 per cent chance of showers are expected. A low of 0 C and a 30 per cent chance of rain showers or flurries are expected. The weather agency issued a winter travel advisory Saturday, as a local amount of 10-15 cm of snow was expected. WASHINGTON — A tax break for millionaires, and almost everyone else. An end to the COVID-19-era government subsidies that some Americans have used to purchase health insurance. Limits to food stamps, including for women and children, and other safety net programs. Rollbacks to Biden-era green energy programs. Mass deportations. Government job cuts to ''drain the swamp.'' Having won the election and sweeping to power, Republicans are planning an ambitious 100-day agenda with President-elect Donald Trump in the White House and GOP lawmakers in a congressional majority to accomplish their policy goals. Atop the list is the plan to renew some $4 trillion in expiring GOP tax cuts, a signature domestic achievement of Trump's first term and an issue that may define his return to the White House. ''What we're focused on right now is being ready, Day 1,'' said House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., after meeting recently with GOP colleagues to map out the road ahead. The policies emerging will revive long-running debates about America's priorities, its gaping income inequities and the proper size and scope of its government, especially in the face of mounting federal deficits now approaching $2 trillion a year. The discussions will test whether Trump and his Republican allies can achieve the kinds of real-world outcomes wanted, needed or supported when voters gave the party control of Congress and the White House. ''The past is really prologue here,'' said Lindsay Owens, executive director of the Groundwork Collaborative, recalling the 2017 tax debate. Trump's first term became defined by those tax cuts, which were approved by Republicans in Congress and signed into law only after their initial campaign promise to ''repeal and replace'' Democratic President Barack Obama's health care law sputtered, failing with the famous thumbs-down vote by then-Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. The GOP majority in Congress quickly pivoted to tax cuts, assembling and approving the multitrillion-dollar package by year's end. In the time since Trump signed those cuts into law, the big benefits have accrued to higher-income households. The top 1 percent — those making nearly $1 million and above — received about a $60,000 income tax cut, while those with lower incomes got as little as a few hundred dollars, according to the Tax Policy Center and other groups. Some people ended up paying about the same. ''The big economic story in the U.S. is soaring income inequality,'' said Owens. ''And that is actually, interestingly, a tax story.'' In preparation for Trump's return, Republicans in Congress have been meeting privately for months and with the president-elect to go over proposals to extend and enhance those tax breaks, some of which would otherwise expire in 2025. That means keeping in place various tax brackets and a standardized deduction for individual earners, along with the existing rates for so-called pass-through entities such as law firms, doctors' offices or businesses that take their earnings as individual income. Typically, the price tag for the tax cuts would be prohibitive. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that keeping the expiring provisions in place would add some $4 trillion to deficits over a decade. Adding to that, Trump wants to include his own priorities in the tax package, including lowering the corporate rate, now at 21% from the 2017 law, to 15%, and doing away with individual taxes on tips and overtime pay. But Avik Roy, president of the Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity, said blaming the tax cuts for the nation's income inequality is ''just nonsense'' because tax filers up and down the income ladder benefited. He instead points to other factors, including the Federal Reserve's historically low interest rates that enable borrowing, including for the wealthy, on the cheap. ''Americans don't care if Elon Musk is rich,'' Roy said. ''What they care about is, what are you doing to make their lives better?'' Typically, lawmakers want the cost of a policy change to be offset by budget revenue or reductions elsewhere. But in this case, there's almost no agreed-upon revenue raisers or spending cuts in the annual $6 trillion budget that could cover such a whopping price tag. Instead, some Republicans have argued that the tax breaks will pay for themselves, with the trickle-down revenue from potential economic growth. Trump's tariffs floated this past week could provide another source of offsetting revenue. Some Republicans argue there's precedent for simply extending the tax cuts without offsetting the costs because they are not new changes but existing federal policy. ''If you're just extending current law, we're not raising taxes or lowering taxes," said Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, the incoming chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, on Fox News. He said the criticism that tax cuts would add to the deficit is ''ridiculous.'' There is a difference between taxes and spending, he said, "and we just have to get that message out to America.'' At the same time, the new Congress will also be considering spending reductions, particularly to food stamps and health care programs, goals long sought by conservatives as part of the annual appropriations process. One cut is almost certain to fall on the COVID-19-era subsidy that helps defray the cost of health insurance for people who buy their own policies via the Affordable Care Act exchange. The extra health care subsidies were extended through 2025 in Democratic President Joe Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, which also includes various green energy tax breaks that Republicans want to roll back. The House Democratic leader, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, scoffed at the Republican claim that they've won ''some big, massive mandate'' — when in fact, the House Democrats and Republicans essentially fought to a draw in the November election, with the GOP eking out a narrow majority. ''This notion about some mandate to make massive, far-right extreme policy changes, it doesn't exist — it doesn't exist,'' Jeffries said. Republicans are planning to use a budgetary process, called reconciliation, that allows majority passage in Congress, essentially along party lines, without the threat of a filibuster in the Senate that can stall out a bill's advance unless 60 of the 100 senators agree. It's the same process Democrats have used when they had the power in Washington to approve the Inflation Reduction Act and Obama's health care law over GOP objections. Republicans have been here before with Trump and control of Congress, which is no guarantee they will be able to accomplish their goals, particularly in the face of resistance from Democrats.
