The statement comes after Roberts had demanded Hunter be jailed in April 2023 for refusing to hand over his financial records in a child support dispute. Roberts put out a statement through her publisher Skyhorse one week and one day after the president announced that he would pardon Hunter after months of insisting he wouldn't. She penned the book Out of the Shadows: My Life Inside the Wild World of Hunter Biden , which was released in August, about her whirlwind relationship with Hunter at the height of his drug addiction, giving birth to the couple's 6-year-old daughter Navy Joan in August 2018. 'I think what Joe did is what the love of any parent would do and not everybody will understand that,' she said. 'I'd like to see more of that love towards Navy Joan and hope that Biden will take the steps to become a grandparent for my daughter,' she added. As part of her eventual child support agreement with Hunter, Roberts OKed getting paid less money each month as long as Hunter started working toward having a real relationship with their child - and they have connected over Zoom calls. Roberts has also expressed that she'd love Navy Joan to have a relationship with her famous grandparents, admitting in the past that it's been hurtful that her daughter wasn't included in the White House's Christmas stocking display . The president pardoned his son the day after the trip She started the statement by saying, 'I don't know what it's like to be president so I can't say what choices I would make if I was in Biden's shoes, but I am a mother.' 'There's nothing I wouldn't do for my child. No barrier I wouldn't break for Navy Joan,' Roberts said. She added that she believed Hunter was 'targeted because of who his dad is.' 'Many people have done what he's done and have never gotten in trouble,' she continued. 'But because his dad is president, he's being held to a different set of circumstances.' In June, Hunter had been convicted of three felony charges for federal gun violations - after lying about his sobriety when purchasing a firearm. Hunter's drug use was widely known about after he penned a memoir on the subject. He also pleaded guilty in a federal tax case. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has been peppered with questions since, since Biden had adamently said he would not pardon Hunter. She told reporters Friday that the reason for the flip-flop was that 'circumstances have changed.' 'Look, if you look at his statement, it's pretty comprehensive. It's in his own voice. I think it takes you through his thinking. And he did - he wrestled with this. He wrestled with this,' Jean-Pierre said. 'And again, he said, in his statement, in his own voice, that he made that decision this past weekend.' 'And the fact is, when you think about how the president got to this decision, circumstances have changed. They have,' she argued. While the Nasdaq Composite and the S&P 500 were broadly unchanged, the indexes both finished slightly in negative territory. This snapped the Nasdaq's four-session run of higher closes, and ended the S&P 500's own run at three sessions. On a day of few catalysts, investors responded to yields on U.S. government bonds inching higher, including the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note hitting its highest since early May at 4.64% earlier in the session. A strong auction of seven-year notes early in the afternoon though helped yields come off slightly, with the 10-year note at 4.58% in late-afternoon trade. Higher yields are traditionally seen as negative for growth stocks, as it raises the cost of their borrowing to fund expansion. With markets increasingly dominated by the megacap technology stocks known as the Magnificent Seven, crimping their performance - especially in lieu of other market catalysts - will put downward pressure on benchmark indexes. The S&P 500 slipped 2.45 points, or 0.04%, to 6,037.59 points, while the Nasdaq Composite lost 10.77 points, or 0.05%, to 20,020.36. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 28.77 points, or 0.07%, to 43,325.80. Six of the megacaps fell, with Tesla leading decliners with a 1.8% fall. The outlier was Apple, rising 0.3% and continuing to edge closer to becoming the first company in the world to hit a market value of $4 trillion. The megacap tech stocks came off somewhat in the summer, as investors sought to rotate some capital into other sectors offering more value. Since the U.S. elections in November though, they have resumed their drive upwards and have outperformed the equal-weighted version of the S&P 500, said Adam Turnquist, chief technical strategist for LPL Financial. "As a technician, what you want to see is breakouts in absolute terms and relative terms and the Mag 7 is checking the boxes there, so very constructive leadership going into the year-end," he said. The three main indexes have hit multiple record highs this year on hopes of a lower interest rate environment and the prospects of artificial intelligence boosting corporate profits. However, U.S. stocks have hit a speed bump in the final month of the year following an election-led rally in November as investors assess the Federal Reserve's projection of fewer interest rate cuts in 2025. Looking ahead, LPL Financial's Turnquist said the last few weeks have seen significant reliance on the Magnificent Seven stocks driving markets higher, and we may be starting to see the cracks in this momentum. Therefore, to see further benchmark index increases, we will need to see input from other sectors of the economy. One data release on Thursday showed the number of Americans filing new applications for jobless benefits dipped to the lowest in a month last week, consistent with a cooling but still healthy U.S. labor market. Markets are in a seasonally strong period - called the "Santa Claus rally" - a pattern attributed to low liquidity, tax-loss harvesting and investing of year-end bonuses. The S&P 500 has gained an average of 1.3% in the last five trading days of December and the first two days of January since 1969, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac. Cryptocurrency-related stocks were down after Bitcoin declined 3.9%. MicroStrategy, MARA Holdings and Coinbase Global all fell between 1.9% and 4.8%. Among the 11 S&P sectors which traded lower were consumer discretionary, off 0.6%, and the energy index, which slipped 0.1% as it tracked marginal weakness in U.S. crude prices. It was more Marta Magic. That goal last weekend helped propel the Orlando Pride into Saturday's National Women's Soccer League championship game against the Washington Spirit. Barbra Banda also scored in the Pride's 3-2 semifinal victory over the Kansas City Current . While Banda has had an incredible first season with the Pride, captain Marta has been the talisman that has helped lead the team in its remarkable turnaround this year. The last time the Pride were in the NWSL playoffs was in 2017 — Marta's first year with the club. But this season they nearly went undefeated, going 23 games without a loss to start the season before losing 2-0 to the Portland Thorns with just two regular-season games left. “I think because of the way that we did it, during this season, from beginning to now, it’s something very special that I’ve never had before with any other club that I’ve played for," Marta said. "Plus year by year, we see in America, strong competition. This is the best league in the world. And you never know what’s going to happen, and it’s hard to keep winning the games, being in the first place almost like the whole season. That’s why it’s really different and so special.” Marta’s goal was the latest gasp-inducing moment in a stellar career filled with them. Known by just her first name, the 38-year-old is a six-time FIFA world player of the year. "Let's see if tomorrow I can do something similar — or even better," Marta said on Friday. I told him it’s not my goal anymore,” she said. “But I’m always available to help the national team. And if they think I still can do something during this preparation for the World Cup, yeah, I would be happy to help them." Marta's club career started in Brazil when she was just 16. She has also played in Sweden and in the U.S. professional women's leagues that came before the NWSL. With nine regular-season goals, Marta has had one of her best seasons since she joined the Pride. “I can never pick a side, I never pick favorites — but I love to see this for Marta," U.S. coach Emma Hayes said. “Marta is someone we all like, admire and are grateful for. And that goal was just like prime Marta at her best. And so grateful for and thankful for her that she got the opportunity with another game with her team.” The Pride went 18-2-6 this season, clinching the NWSL Shield for the first trophy in club history. The Salvation Army says its donations are down 50 per cent compared to last year, due to the Canada Post work stoppage. Glenn van Gulik, the divisional secretary for public relations with charity, tells CTV News Ottawa they haven’t been able to receive mail-in donations or send out their donation appeals since Nov. 15, when the strike began. “That's preventing individuals from receiving the direct mail that they're so used to at this time of the year,” he said. “Also it's preventing individuals from actually sending their mail back to us with that cheque. This strike couldn't have come at a worse time for The Salvation Army.” November and December account for roughly 65 per cent of the organization’s fundraising every year, when the spirit of giving is in the air. “The strike is having a dramatic impact, preventing all those funds from coming in to support the work at The Salvation Army,” van Gulik continued. The lack of mail-in donations has put more importance on The Salvation Army’s other methods of fundraising, like their signature kettles, set up in malls and grocery stores over the holidays. Brockville, Ont. resident John Agnew has been volunteering with the charity for 10 years. “I love doing it. The review from January 2024 was written by a user with the profile name "Luigi (lnmangione)" and the same photo that Mangione used in other social media profiles . Kaczynski, convicted of a series of mail bombings between 1978 and 1995 that killed 3 and injured 23, was a "mathematics prodigy" begins the 8-paragraph review of the manifesto, “Industrial Society and Its Future." The review concludes with a 4-paragraph quote the reviewer said he'd found online that ends: "’Violence never solved anything’ is a statement uttered by cowards and predators." The review said Kaczynski’s manifesto examined "the question of 21st century quality of life.” “It’s easy to quickly and thoughtless write this off as the manifesto of a lunatic, in order to avoid facing some of the uncomfortable problems it identifies.
