#lodi646 Janette Nesheiwat, a family medicine doctor who runs a chain of urgent care clinics, is President-elect Donald Trump ’s pick for surgeon general ― one of the nation’s leading voices on matters of public health. She’s a fixture on Fox News , home to several of Trump’s other intended Cabinet nominees . And she’s long been a vocal Trump supporter: Her social media accounts feature videos of Trump wishing her a happy birthday, selfies with him on the White House lawn and pictures with members of his inner circle at his Madison Square Garden rally. Her sister, Julia Nesheiwat, also served as Trump’s homeland security adviser during his last year in office. If she’s confirmed by the Senate, she’ll be expected to set the tone on how the government approaches Americans’ medical concerns, launch programs to promote healthy lifestyles and weigh in on ongoing public health issues, from the opioid epidemic to youth nicotine use. And she’ll also oversee the 6,000 members of the United States Public Health Service Corps. Here’s what else there is to know about her: She’s a Fox News medical contributor with little public health experience Nesheiwat, the medical director for a New York-area urgent care clinic network, has been a Fox News medical contributor since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. On her website and social media, she’s shared about her medical missions to Ukraine and Morocco. But overall, her public health experience is thin compared to that of the current surgeon general, Vivek Murthy, who also served under former President Barack Obama and was involved in multiple nationwide health care efforts prior to taking the job. Fox News has called on Nesheiwat to weigh in on all sorts of medical stories. When Trump began taking the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine to ward off COVID-19, Nesheiwat came on to say it was a “ smart ” idea and that she’d prescribed it to some of her patients infected with the virus. At the time, no testing had established the effectiveness of using hydroxychloroquine, which has substantial potential harms, to prevent COVID-19. The World Health Organization later said that after completing six trials, it did not recommend taking hydroxychloroquine to either prevent or treat the disease. Nesheiwat emphasized the importance of consulting with a doctor before trying out the drug. But people found ways around that. After Trump began promoting the drug, a man in Arizona died from ingesting a chloroquine-containing aquarium product. She sells her own brand of dietary supplements Nesheiwat is behind a dietary supplement called BC Boost that contains vitamins C, B-12, D and zinc. The product, which features her image on the bottle, claims that within a few weeks, “your immune system will still be strengthened.” “I was always telling my patients who were unwell drink some tea, take some vitamin b12 and vitamin C,” she says on a website advertising the supplement . “I found myself repeating my all natural regimen to my patients over and over ‘take some B12 and C to Boost’ your immune system.” Medical experts and public health agencies say that for the vast majority of people, the best way to get those vitamins is through a healthy diet . Overconsumption of certain nutrients — including some of the vitamins in BC Boost’s product, albeit at higher doses — may lead to serious health problems , including kidney stones and heart rhythm issues. While the supplement industry is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, the agency does not consider supplements to be medicine, and companies are not required to prove that their products are effective. A 30-day supply of Nesheiwat’s product costs $26.99. She’s praised vaccines but slammed vaccine mandates Nesheiwat has been a big proponent of the COVID-19 vaccine for adults, saying its benefits “greatly outweigh” any short-lived side effects and describing it as “a gift from God .” But in the years since the peak of the pandemic, Nesheiwat has expressed opposition to vaccine requirements. “To mandate vaccines, at this point, I think, is the wrong move,” she said on Fox News in the summer of last year. She also blamed vaccine mandates for negatively affecting the U.S. workforce. “We lost good firefighters, police officers, teachers, healthcare providers and even athletes who refused to capitulate to the out-of-date, CDC regulations,” she wrote in an opinion piece for Fox News in April 2023. In that same piece, Nesheiwat claimed mask and vaccine mandates were ineffective because the virus continued to spread, even with these measures in place. But she at least partially credited the shots for easing the pandemic: “With time,” she wrote, “the severity decreased most likely due to population immunity and re-infection along with vaccination.” Nesheiwat has also questioned giving the COVID-19 vaccine to children. In late 2021, she said on Fox News that “a booster or third dose might cause ... a rare form of myocarditis or pericarditis ,” which are types of heart inflammation, in young boys. She failed to mention that such side effects following a vaccine are very rare, and that patients are much more likely to develop those conditions following COVID-19 infection than they are from the vaccine. She’s spoken out against treatments for transgender kids During a 2022 Fox News appearance , Nesheiwat acknowledged that transgender children exist and urged their parents to “accept them and love them for who they are,” noting that rates of suicide attempts among transgender kids are significantly higher than that of their cisgender peers. Despite acknowledging that, she claimed the medical establishment is “only wanting to push drugs and hormones and other types of surgical interventions, rather than taking a conservative approach, such as psychotherapy.” It’s false that doctors are pushing those types of treatments on children. A 2022 Reuters report found that only around 10% of 42,167 children ages 6-17 who’d been diagnosed with gender dysphoria in 2021 were prescribed hormone or puberty blocker treatments. Among those with the diagnosis, a mere 0.6% of them received gender-affirming top surgery. Nesheiwat’s stance on this issue is out of step with that of every major medical group in the United States, which have determined that gender-related medical care is effective and medically necessary. She’s also accused Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra of focusing about transgender health care at the expense of addressing sexually transmitted infections and spoken out against transgender athletes’ inclusion in women’s sports. Waymo has announced plans to bring its self-driving taxis to in early 2025, beating Japanese automakers to the draw and stealing a march on Tesla’s robotaxi in the largest urban market for autonomous driving outside China. This past week the Alphabet (Google) subsidiary revealed a partnership with , the top taxi and limousine service company in Tokyo, and , Japan’s most popular taxi app. Nihon Kotsu will be in charge of managing and servicing of Waymo vehicles. GO provides easy-to-understand directions in English. First, Nihon Kotsu drivers will operate Waymo’s cars manually to map the central areas of the city – the heavily traveled and frequently visited districts of Shinjuku-ku, Shibuya-ku, Minato-ku, Chiyoda-ku, Shinagawa-ku and Koto-ku. Then the all-electric Jaguar I-PACE autonomous vehicles will go on their first outside the US. Waymo boasts. The company goes on to explains: “The Waymo driver is our autonomous driving technology that never gets drunk, tired or distracted,” Waymo boasts. “Each time we test the Waymo Driver in regions far from where we typically operate, we prioritize safety and are mindful of our footprint.” The company explains its procedure as follows: Watch a video showing a Waymo vehicle in traffic . Tokyo’s street map is very complex and, like the British, the Japanese drive on the left-hand side of the road. This will take some getting used to. But Waymo would be able to apply its experience in Tokyo to London and other big cities where they drive on the left – in Mumbai and Delhi, for example. Safety is essential to winning the trust of the public and Waymo has a relatively : about one crash resulting in injury per million miles of driving, . In Waymo’s estimation, compared with the average human driver over 25 million miles of driving in Phoenix and San Francisco, the Waymo Driver had 81% fewer airbag deployment crashes, 72% fewer injury causing crashes and 57% fewer police-reported crashes. So far, no fatalities have been reported. But Waymo Driver does make mistakes. Last June, while on the way to pick up a passenger in Phoenix, a Waymo self-driving taxi crashed into a telephone pole. No one was hurt, but the company recalled all 672 autonomous vehicles it was operating at the time for a software update. There was also a 444-vehicle crash-related recall earlier this year and 2 vehicles were recalled in December 2023, again for software updates. In the six months to 2024, Waymo vehicles were involved in 17 crashes and five other incidents involving potential violations of traffic safety laws. There were no injuries reported. According to an analysis of US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) made by Craft Law Firm, a total of 3,979 accidents involving autonomous vehicles were reported between 2019 and June 17, 2024. After more than doubling to 1,450 in 2022, the number dropped to 1,353 in 2023 and was down to 473 in the first half of 2024, demonstrating that safety has improved while the number of autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles on the road, and the number of miles driven, has greatly increased. In October 2024, Waymo reported that its self-driving taxis were providing more than 150,000 paid rides per week – up from about 100,000 in August and 50,000 last May – over a total distance of more than one million miles. Of the 3,979 accidents reported to the NHTSA, Tesla accounted for 2,146, Waymo for 415, GM for 219, Cruise for 187, Honda for 155, and Subaru, Toyota, Ford, BMW, Kia, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and some 40 other companies for the remainder. Cruise was acquired by GM in 2016 and shut down in December 2024. This was also a setback for , which had formed a partnership with GM to develop self-driving vehicles and invested in Cruise. Citing a study by the iSeeCars website, reports that Tesla has the highest fatal accident rate among auto brands in the US. There is even a website, which says it “is a record of Tesla accidents that involved a driver, occupant, cyclist, motorcyclist, or pedestrian death, whether or not the Tesla or its driver were at fault,” with “as much related crash data as possible.” The website, which was updated on October 20, notes 51 fatalities related to Tesla Autopilot and two related to FSD (Full Self-Driving). This is important because, as The Wall Street Journal reported in August, “Since 2021, Tesla has reported over 1,200 crashes related to its driver assistance system called Autopilot to federal regulators,” and the NHTSA has “tied at least to the tech[nology]. But it’s been hard for the public to understand the role Autopilot plays in crashes because NHTSA’s reports are heavily redacted. Tesla considers information about Autopilot proprietary, and key details like the crash narrative and even the exact date are obscured in public reports.” In the US, Waymo’s self-driving taxis are currently operating in Phoenix, San Francisco and Los Angeles, with commercial service in Austin, Atlanta and Miami scheduled to start in 2025. In Austin, a limited began in October. Tesla’s much-hyped robotaxi, which it also calls , probably won’t be on the road until late 2026 at the earliest. At its public unveiling in October, CEO Elon Musk said it would be in production “before 2027.” Cybercab has been driving Tesla’s stock price higher, but not much else. Furthermore, Tesla has been in Japan since 2014, but there are very few of its vehicles on the road. Meanwhile, a Japanese venture called is working on autonomous driving software that uses neural networks to transform camera imagery directly into driving commands to enable a self-driving vehicle to go anywhere in all conditions, “equipped with human-like knowledge and decision-making capabilities.” Believing that “what is necessary for autonomous driving is not good eyes but a good brain,” Turing is developing generative AI that “directly issues driving instructions from camera images ... without using many sensors or high-precision maps.” Its biggest challenge now appears to be catching up and keeping up with Waymo. The Minister of Education, Dr Mauruf Alausa, says the Federal Government has, henceforth, cancelled foreign trainings for scholars. Alausa, who said this at the opening ceremony of a three-day conference organised by the British Council, on Tuesday in Abuja, said that scholars would now be trained within Nigeria. The theme of the conference is, “Building Sustainable and Relevant Tertiary Institutions and Systems in Africa”. The minister said that the Federal Government would be spending substantial money in building simulation lab, as well as building and developing the country’s universities. “We have just decided to canceled foreign training for scholars. The amount of money we are spending to train one scholar abroad, we could use it to train 20 people here. We will be training everybody here. “We will unleash capacity in our universities. We are going to be spending more money now on research, innovation, and also on welfare, both on our academics and non-academics,” he said. The minister said that the Federal Government was poised to use education to empower the youths. “I have just spoken about the first component of our six-pillar agenda. The second component will be focusing heavily on technical, vocational and educational training,” he said. He said that young Nigerians would be incentivise to go to technical college and acquire technical knowledge. “We will pay for their tuition as a second step, and as a third step, a master craft person, when they will get their practical training, we will pay them as well. “The curriculum will be 80 per cent practical on-the-job training and 20 per cent didactic, and as they are finishing, we will also give them entrepreneurial grants, not loan,” he said. Speaking on education budget, he said that people only looked at the money on the budget without considering what the government spends on tertiary institutions. READ ALSO: According to him, people just look at what is budgeted to the education ministry, but not really counting the fact that it is also funding federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. Earlier, Dr Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, said that with the growing African population that might hit 2.5 billion by 2050; Africa needed to build strong and sustainable tertiary institutions Montgomery said that such institutions should be able to produce skilled and employable graduates. “Africa is growing, it has a hugely young population. It is going to be 2.5 billion people by 2025 “So you need to harness the demographic dividend, and we need to work harder to build institutions that are sustainable and resilient. “We need to evolve higher education systems, so that they are better able to harness talent, and are better able also to produce graduate skills and knowledge, which aligned to the growing economies,” he said. According to him, social progress and economic prosperity rely on a healthy tertiary education system. “The transnational education partnership that we have agreed in Nigeria is creating more linkages between Nigerian higher education institutions and UK universities “We hope in time, that it is going to unlock more finance, more expertise, more partnerships between UK institutions and Nigerian institutions. “In 2022, we had about 750,000 overseas students who came to the UK to study in our higher education institutions, and many of them, tens of thousands of them, come from the African continent,” he said. Mr Steve Smith, the UK Prime Minister’s International Education Champion, said that the UK’s international education strategy emphasised the importance of education as a tool for social and economic transformation. Smith said that it sets out the UK government’s ambition to foster strong internationally connected education systems that enabled knowledge sharing, innovation and a welcoming environment for students globally. “In Africa, this has to include listening to African voices and leaders to develop respectable and equitable UK-Africa partnerships that enhance people-to-people links. “That will also support research collaborations and align educational goals with the evolving needs of society, all on the basis of mutual respect ” he said.Bashir puts up 27, Monmouth knocks off Fairfield 88-74Partnering with hummel and Northwell Health, the new kit honors the club's iconic local roots. LOS ANGELES — Londynn Jones scored 15 points, making all five of her 3-pointers, and fifth-ranked UCLA stunned No. 1 South Carolina 77-62 on Sunday, ending the Gamecocks' overall 43-game winning streak and their run of 33 consecutive road victories. The Gamecocks (5-1) lost for the first time since April 2023, when Caitlin Clark and Iowa beat them in the NCAA Tournament national semifinals. Te-Hina Paopao scored 18 points and Tessa Johnson scored 14 for the Gamecocks, whose road winning streak was third-longest in Division I history. It was the first time UCLA took down a No. 1 team in school history, having been 0-20 in such games. UCLA (5-0) dominated from start to finish, with the Bruins' suffocating defense preventing the Gamecocks from making any sustained scoring runs. South Carolina: The Gamecocks trailed by double-digits at halftime for the first time since Dec. 21, 2021, against Stanford, according to ESPN. Chloe Kitts, who averages a team-leading 14 points, finished the game with 2 points on 1 of 7 shooting. UCLA: The Bruins led 43-22 at halftime. Eight different players scored and contributed to 11-0 and 7-0 runs in the first and second quarters as they shot 52% from the field. The first quarter set the tone for a game in which the Gamecocks never led. They missed their first nine shots and were 4 of 18 from the floor in the quarter. UCLA ran off 11 straight points to take a 20-10 lead into the second quarter. The Bruins dominated the boards, 41-34, and held the Gamecocks well under their scoring average of 80.2 points.
