Why Miami’s Pop-Tarts Bowl appearance is important even after missing College Football Playoff
One week into a new Syria, rebels aim for normalcy and Syrians vow not to be silent again DAMASCUS (AP) — A transformation has started to take place in the week since the unexpected overthrow of Syria’s President Bashar Assad. Suddenly in charge, the rebels have been met with a mix of excitement, grief and hope. And so far the transition has been surprisingly smooth. Reports of reprisals, revenge killings and sectarian violence are minimal, looting and destruction has been quickly contained. But there are a million ways it could go wrong. Syria is broken and isolated after five decades of Assad family rule. Families have been torn apart by war, former prisoners are traumatized, and tens of thousands of detainees remain missing. The economy is wrecked, poverty is widespread, inflation and unemployment are high. Corruption seeps through daily life. Christians in Syria mark country's transformation with tears as UN envoy urges an end to sanctions DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — In churches across long-stifled Syria, Christians have marked the first Sunday services since Bashar Assad’s ouster in an air of transformation. Some were in tears, others clasped their hands in prayer. The U.N. envoy for Syria is calling for a quick end to Western sanctions as the country’s new leaders and regional and global powers discuss the way forward. The Syrian government has been under sanctions by the United States, the European Union and others for years as a result of Assad’s brutal response to what began as peaceful anti-government protests in 2011 and spiraled into civil war. Israel will close its Ireland embassy over Gaza tensions as Palestinian death toll nears 45,000 DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel says it will close its embassy in Ireland as relations deteriorate over the war in Gaza, where Palestinian medical officials say new Israeli airstrikes have killed over 30 people including children. Israel's decision to close the embassy came in response to what Israel’s foreign minister has described as Ireland's “extreme anti-Israel policies.” Ireland earlier announced that it would recognize a Palestinian state. And the Irish cabinet last week decided to formally intervene in South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, which accuses Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. The Palestinian death toll in the war is approaching 45,000. The GOP stoked fears of noncitizens voting. Cases in Ohio show how rhetoric and reality diverge AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Ohio's Republican secretary of state and attorney general sought to reassure voters before the November election that the state's elections were being vigorously protected against the possibility of immigrants voting illegally. That push coincided with a national Republican messaging strategy warning that potentially thousands of ineligible voters would be voting. The officials' efforts in Ohio led to charges against just six noncitizens in a state with 8 million registered voters. That outcome and the stories of some of those now facing charges show the gap both in Ohio and across the United States between the rhetoric about noncitizen voting and the reality that it's rare and not part of a coordinated scheme to throw elections. South Korean leaders seek calm after Yoon is impeached SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s opposition leader has offered to work with the government to ease the political tumult, a day after the opposition-controlled parliament voted to impeach conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol over a short-lived attempt to impose martial law. Liberal Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, whose party holds a majority in the National Assembly, urged the Constitutional Court to rule swiftly on Yoon’s impeachment and proposed a special council for policy cooperation between the government and parliament. Yoon’s powers have been suspended until the court decides whether to remove him from office or reinstate him. If Yoon is dismissed, a national election to choose his successor must be held within 60 days. Storms across US bring heavy snow, dangerous ice and a tornado in California OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Inclement weather has plagued areas of the U.S. in the first half of the weekend, with dangerous conditions including heavy snow, a major ice storm and unusual tornado activity. An ice storm beginning Friday created treacherous driving conditions across Iowa and eastern Nebraska. More than 33 inches of snow was reported near Orchard Park, New York, which is often a landing point for lake-effect snow. On Saturday, a tornado touched down in Scotts Valley, California, causing damage and several injuries. In San Francisco, a storm damaged trees and roofs and prompted a tornado warning, which was a first for a city that has not experienced a tornado since 2005. Small businesses say cautious shoppers are seeking 'cozy' and 'festive' this holiday season With a late Thanksgiving, the holiday shopping season is five days shorter than last year, and owners of small retail shops say that people have been quick to snap up holiday décor early, along with gifts for others and themselves. Cozy items like sweaters are popular so far. Businesses are also holding special events to get shoppers in the door. But there’s little sense of the freewheeling spending that occurred during the pandemic. Overall, The National Retail Federation predicts retail sales in November and December will rise between 2.5% and 3.5% compared with same period a year ago. US agencies should use advanced technology to identify mysterious drones, Schumer says After weeks of fear and bewilderment about the drones buzzing over parts of New York and New Jersey, U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer is urging the federal government to deploy better drone-tracking technology to identify and ultimately stop the airborne pests. The New York Democrat is calling on the Department of Homeland Security to immediately deploy advanced technology to identify and track drones back to their landing spots. That is according to briefings from his office. Federal authorities have said that the drones do not appear to be linked to foreign governments. West Africa regional bloc approves exit timeline for 3 coup-hit member states ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — West Africa’s regional bloc ECOWAS has approved an exit timeline for three coup-hit nations. It comes after a nearly yearlong process of mediation to avert the unprecedented disintegration of the grouping. The president of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, said in a statement: “The authority decides to set the period from 29 January, 2025 to 29 July 2025 as a transitional period and to keep ECOWAS doors open to the three countries during the transition period." In a first in the 15-nation bloc’s nearly 50 years of existence, the military juntas of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso announced in January that they decided to leave ECOWAS. Pope Francis makes 1st papal visit to France's Corsica awash in expressions of popular piety AJACCIO, Corsica (AP) — Pope Francis on the first papal visit ever to the French island of Corsica on Sunday called for a dynamic form of laicism, promoting the kind of popular piety that distinguishes the Mediterranean island from secular France as a bridge between religious and civic society. The one-day visit to Corsica’s capital Ajaccio, birthplace of Napoleon, on Sunday is one of the briefest of his papacy beyond Italy’s borders, just about nine hours on the ground, including a 40-minute visit with French President Emmanuel Macron. It is the first papal visit ever to the island, which Genoa ceded to France in 1768 and is located closer to the Italian mainland than France.

Oscar Health EVP Quane sells $271,293 in stockThe Miami Hurricanes, who once appeared to be a near-lock for the College Football Playoff, are not playing for a national title. Instead, they will play in the Pop-Tarts Bowl in Orlando. That bowl berth against Iowa State is a let-down for fans with dreams of a sixth national title in their minds, as well as players hoping to compete for a championship. However, Miami’s trip to Orlando and the lead-up to it are still crucial periods for the Hurricanes for multiple reasons. First, it’s a chance for the program to achieve something it has not done in more than two decades: win 11 games. Although the 11th win won’t get them closer to a championship, it is a good sign of the program’s progress over Mario Cristobal’s tenure. It would also end UM’s five-game losing streak in bowls. “We’re not satisfied,” Cristobal said. “We want to win every single game. We won 10. We were close on the other two, but close isn’t good enough. We want progress. We’re hungry and driven to get better, and so that’s what our focus is on: to improving as a football program, to getting better, to moving into the postseason with an opportunity against a great football team like this and putting our best on the field.” There are signs the Hurricanes will show up at close to full strength for the bowl game. Running back Damien Martinez announced he was going to play, and star quarterback Cam Ward said in a video call posted on social media that he intends to play, as well. “We’re trying to win our first bowl game in 20 years,” Ward said in the video, mistaking the length of UM’s long bowl losing streak. “We’re going hard.” Playing in the bowl game also provides the opportunity for the Hurricanes to get in several practices between now and the game. That means Miami can develop its young players and prepare them for next season during both the practices and the bowl game itself. “It’s extremely valuable,” Cristobal said. “You really don’t have many opportunities throughout the course of the year — time is limited more and more each season with your student-athletes. I want to state this and be very clear: it’s very important, it’s ultra-important for the University of Miami to continue to develop and grow and progress by stressing the importance of offseason opportunities ... You learn a lot about your team and learn a lot about your people and your program when you head to the postseason.” Of course, there are potential negatives. Players can get hurt; Mark Fletcher Jr. suffered a foot injury in the Pinstripe Bowl last year that cost him all of spring practice. A poor performance can also potentially set the tone for next season, like how Florida State, fresh off a playoff snub last year, suffered a devastating loss against Georgia in the Orange Bowl and went on to a dismal 2-10 season this year. “This is the ending of ’24 and the beginning of ’25,” Cristobal said. “This is the last opportunity to be on the field and carry some momentum into the offseason. So it is, in essence, it is the most important game because it’s the next game. “There’s a lot of excitement in the form of opportunity for our guys. Our guys love to play football. The chance to play one more time with this special group — this is a special group of guys now. They’ve worked hard to really change the trajectory of the University of Miami, and they want to continue to elevate the status and the culture at the University of Miami. So certainly a ton to play for.” ____ Get local news delivered to your inbox!
:Photoshop maker Adobe forecast fiscal 2025 revenue below Wall Street estimates on Wednesday, suggesting the company's investments to weave AI into its software applications were taking longer than expected to bear fruit. Shares of the San Jose, California-based company fell nearly 8 per cent in extended trading. The company forecast annual revenue for 2025 between $23.30 billion and $23.55 billion, compared with estimates of $23.78 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Adobe expects foreign exchange volatility and the company's shift towards subscriptions to cut into its fiscal 2025 revenue by about $200 million. The company is making significant investments in AI-driven image and video generation technologies in response to the growing competition from well-capitalized startups such as Stability AI and Midjourney. While Adobe projected strong growth for the second half of the year in June, its forecast on Wednesday indicated the company was still struggling to monetize its AI push. Adobe last year launched Firefly, a family of generative AI models that is integrated into its various applications and products. Last month, the company added software tools that let customers use AI to create images based on Adobe's library of stock images. It forecast first-quarter revenue between $5.63 billion and $5.68 billion, which fell short of estimates of $5.73 billion. Adobe's fourth-quarter revenue rose 11 per cent to $5.61 billion from a year ago, beating market expectations of $5.54 billion.Pay first, deliver later: Some women are being asked to prepay for their babyOmnicom And Interpublic Group Merger: Dis-Synergies Could Be Substantial

A single man devised a humorous and imaginative way to fake his dating life and entertain the internet. Instead of signing up for dating apps, he grabbed his camera and brought an imaginary girlfriend to life. A post shared by 地主恵亮 (@jinushikeisuke) Meet Jinushi Keisuke , a photographer and writer for the Japanese website Daily Portal Z . With the help of a tripod, selfie stick, wig, and an array of props (including his own hand), Jinushi created couple photos like this one. Inspiration for the project struck while he was on a trip. A post shared by 地主恵亮 (@jinushikeisuke) I was traveling and took a photo with a statue of a woman, and that’s when it occurred to me – I could create joyful couple photos all by myself. — Jinushi Keisuke On Instagram, Jinushi shared both the end results and the behind-the-scenes photos from his project. This sweet moment between him and his “girlfriend” was actually achieved using a wig and a tripod... ...in a very public place. The same goes goes this adorable “date” at the park. Jinushi fully committed to the bit by covering one of his hands with a lighter shade of foundation and painting his nails... ...to create couple photos like this one. I applied foundation to my hand and wore nail polish to replicate a woman’s soft, shiny hand, and it works perfectly if you slip a scrunchie on your wrist. — Jinushi Keisuke These photos aren’t new–Jinushi posted his last couple photo in 2018–but they recently went viral all over again on Chinese social media. According to a report by the South China Morning Post , WeChat users have been enjoying Jinushi’s lighthearted photos and loving how Jinushi brought a touch of whimsy to mundane, everyday life. Nowadays, Jinushi isn’t posting photos with his imaginary girlfriend anymore, but he is still taking photos and spreading joy online. Trial of former Pakistani spy chief begins for political manipulationRouters continue to advance in South Africa as technology evolves in leaps and bounds, and 5G has not been left behind in those evolutions. This advancement has unfortunately shown to have a downside as some suppliers are now selling routers proposed to have 5G capabilities. A recent probe by MyBroadband has revealed that a few online stores are reportedly doing false advertising that many consumers are not aware of. Here’s what we found out. FALSELY ADVERTISED 5G ROUTERS According to MyBroadband , they conducted research into the most affordable 5G routers available on the market. This led to a discovery that most of them actually didn’t have 5G capability. They said these false adverts were found on the websites of some major marketplaces. These include Takealot , Makro, Bob Shop and Amazon.co.za . The routers had a large number of routers titled as having 5G or 4G/5G capabilities. However, many of them were reportedly Mi-Fi or portable routers. IF IT’S TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT PROBABLY IS The first red flag when it comes to these routers is the price tags. Many were available at a cost that seemed too good to be true. Most of them cost around R1 000. However, legit 5G routers from reputable networks or internet service providers are usually sold for over R2 000. According to the product description of the routers in question, none of them supported 5G connectivity. This is because 5G can support speed of up to thousands of Mbps. However, the listed routers could only support download and upload speed of 300Mbps and 150Mbps respectively. WHAT THE LAW SAYS ABOUT FALSE ADVERTISING According to the law, Section 29 and Section 41 of the Consumer Protection Act 71 of 2008 applies to false advertising . It says suppliers cannot advertise products or services in a misleading, false or deceptive manner. They are prohibited from using ambiguous or exaggerated language that deceives consumers. This is especially if it led them to purchase items or services they would otherwise not have bought. PRICES OF LEGIT 5G ROUTERS HAVE REDUCED The prices of 5G routers in South Africa have significantly reduced, MyBroadband previously reported on 4 December 2024. Routers from certain brands such as ZTE, saw their prices plummet drastically. For example, the ZTE MC888D was available for R1 499, reduced from R4 499, and the ZTE MC801A cost R2 999 at the time. Sen. Chuck Schumer wants expanded surveillance and drone detection systems for the tristate area following numerous reports of the unmanned flying vehicles disturbing residents . Schumer (D-N.Y.) said federal authorities should hand more power to state and local law enforcement to deal with the drones. “Locals should not have to shake an eight ball to get desperate answers on non-stop drone sightings when the feds can do more to help,” Schumer said Sunday. New Jersey residents have been bothered by drones since late November and numerous recent sightings have been reported in Queens, the Bronx and the Hudson Valley . On Friday night, runways at Stewart International Airport in Orange County were shut down for an hour due to drones. Gov. Hochul said Sunday that the federal government had approved a “state-of-the-art” drone detection system for the state. But that was only one system, a small step in the desired effort, according to Schumer’s office. Schumer specifically focused on a company called Robin, which makes drone detection technology. Over the summer, the Netherlands purchased 51 Robin drone radar systems and sent them to Ukraine . “I want [Robin] deployed across New York and New Jersey and the metro area widely to help give us concrete answers on what is going on and from where,” Schumer said Sunday. “The (briefings) I have had tell me there is no evidence that this is a government or foreign activity and so we have to answer the logical question of ‘Who?’” Federal authorities have downplayed the threat of the drones . The FBI and Department of Homeland Security said Thursday there is no evidence of the drones flying in restricted airspace. In fact, according to the feds, many of the reported “drone” sightings were actually “manned aircraft, operating lawfully.” Republican lawmakers and leaders have urged the federal government to take more decisive action by simply shooting the drones down. It is illegal for private citizens to shoot down drones so the military would have to handle any such action. “Can this really be happening without our government’s knowledge,” President-elect Donald Trump wrote Friday on social media . “I don’t think so! Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down!!!” It is illegal to fly drones in New York City without a permit , leading New York leaders to call for help from the feds. “Our federal partners are deploying a state-of-the-art drone detection system to New York State,” Hochul said in a statement. “This system will support state and federal law enforcement in their investigations. We are grateful to the Biden Administration for their support, but ultimately we need further assistance from Congress.” Hochul mentioned a bill that would allow state and local authorities to respond to drones without consulting the feds first. The bill has not yet hit the Senate floor.
